A Case Report of Subacute Combined Degeneration Secondary to Pernicious Anemia

Abstract
|
|
|
This is a case report of subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord. A 49-year old female patient had the chief complaints of numbness of limbs, especially in soles and palms and spastic . weakness of lower limbs. The past history of total gastrectomy due to stomach cancer 9 years ago.
She had neurological findings of the degeneration of posterior and lateral part of spinal cord.
The hematologic findings (peripheral blood smear and bone marrow aspiration) disclosed macrocytic anemia, and the failure of absorption of vitamin B12 due to defeciency of the intrinsic factor was revealed with the Schilling test.
The above mentioned findings improved with vitamin B12 injection. The diagnosis was made after the exclusion of several conditions which give similar symptoms clinically.
